came across those two photographs in "Beyond Outer Shores" that I am reading, about Old Masset and Haida tribes on the shores of Haida Gwaii. THe two photographs (from 1890 and 1922) mark the disappearance of totem poles that came with Christian white folk.
The row of the totem poles as a way to communicate with the ocean.

as Imax prides itself to deliver "the largest, sharpest and brightest images imaginable. Light from the 15,000-watt lamp of some IMAX projectors is so bright that, if one were operated on the moon, people on Earth could see it with the naked eye".
Conceptually I am seduced to reverse the system i.e. if operated on Earth, eyes/receivers ex-Earth could see it.
Imagining the dome as a screen that is transparent, and that provides a viewing membrane for the outer space, though I can imagine using the clouds as the screen membrane. would that work.
My IMAX movie, or my FAILED IMAX movie as it might end up being if IMAX does not deliver,
is conceptually a video transmission into space.
you might think of strata of clouds that it needs to break through, just refer to satellite images of earth on a "cloudy day"
so the 90 second movie (90 second is the maximum of one imax film reel) might be a transmission with interruptions.
the interruptions themselves could be interpreted by extra-terrestrials as some sort of code.

what should be round is a bit square as I drew it at home on my laptop with the trackpad - sorry.
but after looking at all those clouds I also see popcorn - and thought about a dome of popping corn, bigger then life.
pop-clouds. (remember also silver Warhol clouds that I always liked)
it would be kind of great to film a dome full of popping corn - sort of lit with weird etherial colors,
shot with hi tech imax gear. no?

here is the edge all colored. It will go around with different scales and layerings so things can come out from underneath the folds:
I look at the Correggio dome fresco again to see how shapes emerge from the clouds.
I need to create enough layers of different scales so when the "clouds" shift with rhythm they reveal more and more activity underneath.
there might be some rules - like blue, "camouflaged" objects will move very fast so they can be noticed
or maybe they shoud move slow I dont know
I want the attention to be shifted from side to side, and up and down so one is pushed to look at the edges.

the edge of the paper model i made, in multiple copies, is foamy - sort of baroque,
baggy cloud shapes which I am about to color with blue markers - I just got - Japanese markers - very brushy fancy.

the edge sort of reflects the Correggio clouds from dome fresco, but also the tidal waves, and drifts on water left by big cargo ships I see every morning.
I will use them as texture for the rim of the movie, the rim from which the things will come out and disappear to.
THere will be sensors hidden in those billowing "clouds" that will trigger or be triggered by movement in that area.

RIM - edge ocean and ancient maps

I've made some concave models out of paper so I can play around with layering of images.
THe basic setup would be that the edge, peripheral of the sphere will be the most active part of the movie,
and the center - would be almost empty, or very simple or slow.
I am looking at a lot of acient world maps (image here - recreation of Homer's world view)
where the ocean is the super surrounding,. THe edge, maybe oceanic will be the space where the most complicated and turbulent things will happen - going into jungle towards the center and ending in blind spot in the middle, or slow spot.
So think about peripheral vision as the most resorceful. It should somehow work with sound being "extreme on edges" if that means anything to you.

TECH _ faking fish lens with DeFish software

the imax camera has a fish eye wide lens that then needs to be corrected for dome with a fish eye lens on an imax projector,
after makind a model of a domed screen, I am looking for ways to "fish-lens" the images I will be bringing together:
here is a sample with DeFish, the parameters need to be adjusted, and so far this only deals with stills, but I am sure there is something out there that processes moving images in the same way.
simillar effect can be achieved with a magnifying lens filter any composite making software - I think:

camouflage, attack
also where fear and action are often very straightforward
immediate
the network of those actions can be visualized by observing the movement
of the eye of the predator
Rousseau jungle is in a way simplistic, the layout however with light skies and backgrounds and accumulated surfaces of growth can be helpful in organizing the space
the spectrum of vision in the jungle spills into sound

IDEAS _ Jungle, containters and China

Sig, new ideas are starting to surface. stuff about predatory natures. The general territory would be an imagined jungle-like space, just to ad to IMAX nature territory of irony - (very artificial but lush sort of like paintings of Henri Rousseau (!) his kind of artificiality - I migh even use some parts of his paintings as blurred backgrounds) - sort of a space the eye has not seen but can imagine.
Instead of any human presence you would have things like shipping containters moving behind foliage. a kind of shipyard wilderness.

I saw this tanker or tug boat on my way to the studio, or rather it crossed my window and obscured the horizon, of a China Shipping Line on the Hudson River. Big things moving slowly, containing mystery load:

Rousseau painted his jungles without setting foot out of his little town, which I find important for this one.

considering the Dome-screen necessary fish-lens distortions and particular image distribution (there are diagrams that show how the projected image is layed out. I am using that basic layout to play around with the composition.
THis is just a schematic use of some of the elements I am thinking about, and there will probably be no trace of this imagery when things get cooking...but at least so you know where I am beginning:
